This Green Heron was hunting along the lake edge and spotted something in the water. Whatever was in the water spotted the heron, too, because it swelled up (figuratively and literally) and scared the little fella. We don't have gators in Kentucky so it had to be a fish. I never actually saw what it was, but I'm guessing the heron spooked a carp or a catfish in the shallows. Or maybe a big catfish was trying for a bird breakfast.

...that's a GREEN HERON ... and a FISH???? Looks like all colours but green for the heron, and like the wake from a speedboat! Some fish!
I would say the hunter became the hunted.
Whew that was close
That's a big splash...it would have scared me too:) Happy New Year Brian!
Must have been some fish!
You were on the spot on that one! Great set of shots!
Great action shot, certainly not a little tiddler, whatever it was.
nice wake! :)
Looks like something big to make that wake!
Yikes! That thing scared me too.
Great shots! He really looks spooked in the second one.
Ahaha made me laugh totally. So what is in that pond? I know that is the freaky I am when kayaking on the reservoir in the spring when the salmon are spawning, they lay quietly then go nuts! I'm with the heron - EEKS!
Whoa! Wonder what it was? Sure spooked the heron. They're pretty smart birds from what I've read, so it must've been something scary. Great series!
Poor little birdie! I love the color contrast between the bird and the foliage. Just beautiful! Nice series.
Excellent shots Brian and a great thing to witness :-)
Great captures Brian. I wonder what the creature was in the water. It looks quite large.
Beautiful bird, interesting scenes, did you find out what made that wake?
Wow...right on time....must been a fish right?
Lovely colours on the heron
Perhaps it's the Loch Ness Monster, relocated to Kentucky!!!
Gorgeous photos!
To Eat or Be Eaten..... that is the question.
GREAT shot!
ha ha! looks like he almost hit the drink
Great shots! I bet that bird was a tad nervous.
Wow the colors of the Heron are amazing. That splash is pretty awesome too. Sure wish we knew what caused the bird to be so spooked.
wow, that's a really cool series of photos!
Oh my gosh! Were you saying: See ya later alligator, after a while crocodile? WOW.
A quick decision needed to be made. Perhaps best he left hungry!
Great captures!
Right place, right time, skill and a great camera. Beautiful captures.
Doesn't look like wake from a boat. Maybe a fish?
