Snakes In The Grass

Earlier this month, my daughter and I spotted a couple of Garter snakes slinking around by the back fence. No doubt they were brought out by the unusually warm temperatures and sunshine. They tolerated some photos for a few minutes and then slithered off.

Again with the WOW factor, Brian! Amazing photos...he looked like he was posing for you, then the quick "stick out the tongue" bit, then off he goes. These are so clear and close...I hope you had a really long lens!

I wish I could be as tolerant as you about these guys, BJK! Have a decaying tree stump in the back yard that they've chosen for a nursery. The yard needs mowing, I'm afraid the activity will wake them up. Last year even tried to give them away on Facebook-pleading with my friends to come and get their snake if they'd lost it! No one took me up on the offer. :-) Your photos are fascinating--thanks for the closeups.

Glad to find another photo/blogger from Kentucky. I'll be back to see more of your work.

Wow, I assume they were not the poisonous kind. The last shot with the tongue is cool. Great shots of the snakes.

These are great shots, ones that I will never get or try to attempt as I am not a fan of snakes!! :)

beautiful! you captured their shy personality perfectly. :)

Great shots but I shy away from anything that moves without legs! And even some things that have legs!

Great photos even if they are not my favorite subject matter.

I am hoping that the 3 ft rattlesnake I found last October under my recycle bin has moved on to greener pastures (better yet the neighbors).

You are way too close and personal with that garter snake than I would want to be! Great shots though!!

Wow - those shots are amazing! So close up and personal. Love the last one - you even managed to get the tongue!

Great captures! I saw an endangered San Francisco garter snake last week but it wasn't nearly as cooperative.

Great shots! My daughter has a snake phobia that is pretty severe although it has gotten better as she has gotten older. So I have tried to understand where that comes from. It is such a prevalent phobia that there must be a basis for it somewhere. They don't bother me, but I don't want them in my house. Outside is fine by me. Part of nature.

Wonderful images Brian.

We only have two snakes in the UK... The Adder (poisonous) and the Grass Snake... both are rare to see.

Fantastic captures of the crawler! It's not very often photos of snakes are posted on blogs, I'm looking forward for a chance to take some good shots of one too.

Great shots Brian. The black snakes I see won't stay still when I get close enough for good close ups!

Oh WOW!! Sorry, I know I use that word a lot on your blog but you really have that WOW factor in your photography.
Brilliant images again. Great clarity and awesome capture of the tongue. I am not sure how I would be if I came across a snake in the yard. We have some very venomous snakes in Aus and I doubt I would hang around long enough to check.

Oh my gosh those are incredible close-ups! I have always had a fascination for reptiles and find them beautiful! I don't know what that says about me. Hopefully it just says that I love all things in nature.

Wow... and I hate snakes, all kinds. These are wonderful.
