Merganser Fishing
I was extremely fortunate to photograph this female Hooded Merganser as she was fishing. Normally, mergansers won't let me anywhere near them and it was the first time I had seen one by itself. They typically stay in small flocks. Unlike the Pied-billed Grebe I photographed recently, this merganser didn't spend time playing with her food. She dove, caught it, and swallowed it in fairly short order. Who says girls can't fish as well as the guys?

Extraordinary Mute Swans
Photographing Mute Swans isn't particularly difficult. Though they are a non-native species in this country, most people have at least seen lots of pictures of these Eurasian birds. I think we sometimes become numb to certain birds and animals we consider commonplace. Getting photos of Mute Swans is not the challenge...it's getting interesting photos of them. Sometimes we have to refocus and look for the extraordinary in the ordinary. Don't automatically disregard something just because you've seen it a hundred times.

Mallard Fuzzies
These mallard ducklings were on a lake not from from my home. The way the little ones took turns popping up looked like the duck version of Whack-A-Mole. This was the first and last time I saw them. Fortunately, I took some photos while I had the opportunity.

Canada Fuzzies
While visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains recently, I had the opportunity to photograph these Canada Goose goslings. The photos were taken over several days at two different lakes and of two different flocks.
