For Grandpa

If you read my previous blog post, you know my grandfather passed away recently. This is just a short addendum to that...

Michigan's firearms deer season opened on Monday, November 15th - the day after the memorial service for our grandfather. My youngest brother, Adam, lives in MI and we were staying with him over the weekend. My other brother and I had to drive back to Kentucky on Monday morning. Adam was long gone when we awoke on Monday because he wanted to be in the woods well before first light. We had said our goodbye's the night before.

As we were traveling south on the Interstate, I received a text message at about 10:30 that had a picture attached. The message consisted of two words-

"for grandpa".

Adam was hunting on our grandparent's farm and had killed a 9 point. I immediately called him and I could tell he was very excited and emotional. It was a thrill for him to take the buck on our grandparent's farm and dedicate it to our grandfather! I'm sure Grandpa was smiling down in approval.

You're making me cry again. Your family seems a little spread out, but very close.

BTW, I really liked your blog's new look as well - I just didn't mention it with the post for your grandfather.

I didn't leave a post the last time because this is all so raw still to me. We lost my husbands grandfather , great aunt and great-grandmother within the last year. It stinks! But I wanted to tell your family that I am thinking of them.

Tell your brother congratulations! I am sure that your grandpa and looking down and is so proud of y'all. You are carrying on his legacy.

Well I'm kind of at a loss for words as this scenario hits a little close to home. I'll just say congratulations to Adam on a truly special trophy!

Congrats to your brother! What a precious memory that will be to hold on to.

I'm sorry to hear about your Grandpa. It sounds like he was a special man and made a great impact on your life. I just looked at your previous post (I had missed it somehow) and noticed the picture of you and him after returning from Desert Storm. My husband has a very similar picture of him with his grandpa, and I know it is special to him.

Sorry to hear about your Grandpa. That is so cool your brother got the deer on grandpas land. Nice looking deer too!

My cousin had a similar experiance his grandpa passed away just before deer season & my cousin had never shot a deer. Opening morning some one was sitting in the tree he had picked out. So he sat on a log and out of no were poped a nice 4 point buck needless to say he got the deer.

Thank you for all of the kind words! Adam was very proud to have been able to honor our grandfather in a way that represented his passions and life. I see some of you have been through the same kind of experience.
