My "Blue" Moon

The "blue moon" has been a big deal recently not because it looks any different than any other full moon, but simply because it's the second full moon in a month. It won't occur again until July 2015. I was hoping to get some early evening shots of it while the sky was still blue, but as my luck would have it, clouds rolled in and the moon was covered. Later in the night, the clouds broke a bit, but not enough to get close up shots like I would normally take. Rather than fighting the clouds, I decided to put on a shorter lens and use them to my advantage. The moon actually became the secondary subject.

Down here,we have a second full moon on 30th September, this year, and I hope to be ready.Loved all your shots, the contrast in the cloud colours is super. Cheers from Jean.

g-r-e-a-t thinking Brian! I wrestled also with clouds for a bit. When I stepped back and included the clouds in the photo the moon lost its markings so I ditched those ones. What you've capture by using the shorter lens is super-duper! I hadn't thought to do that at all; I love your results

From my perspective here, your moon looks blue! So, I would say you accomplished what the rest of us did not! Fabulous photos - we had no clouds on the 31st, so I had nothing but sky. A few nights earlier, when the moon was not completely full, there were some passing clouds, but nothing like the effect that you obtained! Just gorgeous!

Wow amazing pictures...we had clear skies very late yesterday evening. So it wasn´t to think about taking pictures with my knowledge and gear..:-(
In the evening the moon showed a little and very short time. I took one picture but havent checked out them yet...

I was exhausted and didn't even try to get a shot. The blue moon seems to have brought out the meanness in our community as we had 3 emergency order of protection hearings Friday. ;(

As always, these are fantastic shots. Glad you thought of using the clouds to your advantage.

Sometimes you get better than what you were asking for. The clouds do bring a different artistic aspect. We will remember how this year's blue moon appeared- peaking among the clouds...thank-you. enJOYed

These came out great. I haven't looked at mine yet...still in the camera...but I was out there about the same time because there was quite a bit of cloud cover.

Wow! I think the clouds really add to these shots. I love them.
I tried taking shots but it was dark out when I remembered and again no decent zoom lens to work with on the old point and shoot so my photo's went to the great Recycle Bin in the sky.

Great shots! It is really beautiful the way things turned out, photographically-speaking! :-) The day before the blue moon we were driving back from our trip and saw it beautifully hanging over the Santa Catalina Mtns. and I thought, tomorrow night I will drive back up this road and get some pictures. But, it was so overcast, and I was so tired, as well, that I knew it would be useless. Maybe I should have tried anyway. I didn't realize we wouldn't have one again till 2015...though I do know they happen really infrequently. I didn't even post about it because I had no photos to use....I could have posted about Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, and his passing so soon before this blue moon. But, I just didn't get it pulled together. I even am reading a book called February House about a home in Brooklyn that was occupied before WWII by artists and writers in a bohemian kind of way, and W.H. Auden and Benjamin Britten produced their collaborative work Paul Bunyan (which was a flop) while living there. They had Paul Bunyan being born in a blue moon. I lost my chance to make any kind of comment, and unfortunately, that opportunity comes only :once in a blue moon." You did an awesome job! :-)

Your blue moon shots are wonderful, the scattered cloud seems to create a ring of light around the moon.

Simply fabulous shots of that blue moon. I got to see it but could not photograph it. Never been lucky with moon shots anyway.

You had me at the first shot. Man, these are good. So different from some of the other shots. The clouds and blue hues makes these unique.
