Youngster On Ice

This juvenile Great Blue Heron seemed to enjoy milling about on the ice. He'd walk back and forth, change positions, and just stand for what seemed like forever. After getting photos and watching him for a while, I actually got bored and left before he did.

Love that second shot. He looks sooo tentative with those big feet. Poor thing.

So endearing looking in all that gawkiness. Do you think he was that enthralled by the ice--or just in a pickle that he couldn't get out of?

The third photo, he is hunched into his"overcoat" as if to say, what is happening now?? Did he stand still, or skid? Each one is super. Cheers from Jean.

it looks darn miserable!! Amazing how they can do that and don't stick to the ice :)! Or that they can walk off without everything frozen to the core

He looks quite funny high stepping across the ice. I'm wondering where they tuck their long necks!

Wonder what he was pondering about...cold feet cannot be that fun!

Poor thing, his feet look cold. Terrific shots though!

Don't you wonder what they are thinking when, as youngsters, they first encounter the ice. Do you think their instincts have an explanation for why their food source has closed it's doors. Great Shots ... Our Herons don't stay around long enough to see ice so this is a new experience for me.

Great pics! They can stand around for quite a while if undisturbed. I imagine I would have left even before you did.

Brian, cool shots of the heron. It seems funny to see it walking on the ice.

Great photos. I wonder if juveniles have to learn to walk on ice?

Perhaps he was stuck to the ice. Nice shots though.

Nice set of pictures - I suppose the heron had to keep moving about to avoid melting through the ice!

Cheers and thanks for linking to WBW

Now he is quite the specimen. Love that third shot where he appears to be prancing along. Oh, how I hope we get to visit the Wildlife Refuge this summer. That is the only way I get to see birds like this. Thanks for all of your visits. genie

Of course you left before him...his life is so much simpler...fish,fish,nap,fish,fish,fish.

Amanda said...

ha! got to admit that would be funny to watch...

Mary Howell Cromer said...

haha he was waiting for you to crack the ice, so he could get a fish...beautiful, yet I would come in out of the cold first, even before getting bored, burr~

He's probably thinking that he needs to go south for the winter.
