Let There Be Light

1/80 sec. f/6.3 ISO 1600

This little rabbit was sitting underneath a tree late in the afternoon. A thunderstorm had moved in and it started raining soon after I took the photo. Between being under the tree and the darkness of the sky, the rabbit was almost invisible to the naked eye. There was very little light where he was sitting. I turned up the ISO and lowered the shutter speed to see if I could get an acceptable result. I used a monopod to steady the lens. You can see the digital noise, particularly in the dark areas of the background. The photo has also been cropped a bit which helps magnify noise. Given the circumstances, I was very happy with the outcome. If I have a choice between increasing the ISO or missing the shot, I'll take the higher ISO and decide later if I like the photo.

Super photo, he posed like a pro!! The background adds to the rabbit's outline, I like it hugely. I wouldn't want to miss a shot like this either. Cheers from Jean.

Brian, the bunny turned out picture perfect- you make a hard shot look so easy to capture.

totally agree with andy. i'd be thrilled to get a shot like this - noise in the background, but rock solid clarity in the bunny!

I really wouldn't have noticed the background until you mentioned it, because my focus was on the precious rabbit when is really clear. I'll think more about ISO & shutter speed now. enJOYed your post.

I totally agree!!! What's amazing to me is that you could do all that and still get the pic!!! By the time I get everything set...that little guy is long gone!!!

What a cute picture. You know how to make a dark photo so bright and clear. I wouldn't have known it was edited as I just don't have the 'eye' for that. Beautiful!!

Your advice to me using that same last statement rings in my ears every time I am struggling with dark or moving conditions. You did a great job with this shot indeed! Honestly, a great subject means that hardly anyone but you will see the noise.

You did a great job at tackling the light problem and overcoming it with a good capture~

I am surprised the bunny sat there long enough for you to think about the shot, and use the monopod. I would say you had success.

Your photos are always "nothing but great"! But, in this one, I felt like I could reach out and touch the rabbit. Maybe it was the highlight in his eye...
