Rural Walkabout

I recently set out to explore some new country with camera in tow. The first part of the hike included a 400 foot drop to the river bottom and after covering about 8 miles, I ended up in open, rolling fields.

Palisades of the Kentucky River.

This waterfall above the river runs heavy after a good rain. On this particular day, it was more of a trickle.

I'm not entirely sure what this is, but it may have been a well at one time.

The ol' Dixie Belle riverboat being prepped and painted for the upcoming tour season.

A shot of the palisades across the river.

This is High Bridge, a railroad bridge that crosses the Kentucky River. It is used by Norfolk Southern Railroad and was originally constructed in 1876. It has gone through several redesigns and was updated to two tracks in 1929. One of the redesign dedications was attended by President Hayes and General William Tecumseh Sherman in 1879. High Bridge is a National Civil Engineering Landmark.

It's funny where plants will grow...even out of solid rock.

This is another smaller waterfall above the river.

Here's where my hike took me out into open country. Kentucky has a wide variety of landscapes from the mountains of eastern Kentucky to the rolling hills in the central part of the state to the flat land of western Kentucky.

Those first two photos remind me of pictures I've seen of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Very different geology from the dry volcanic leftovers where I live. Amazing and beautiful landscape and well done photography.

I felt like I were walking right along with you, except that I didn't have the advantage or the drudgery of making my legs move up and down the paths you took. How does that bridge withstand some of the storms that whip through that area?

Beautiful landscapes, Brian! I love to hear the trickling water - so soothing. Those two old homesteads are really lovely.

Stunning series of photos! The palisades look like an amazing place for a hike; did you have to climb the 400 feet on the way out??? That bridge is incredible also.

I loved the photos, as always! My husband retired from Norfolk Southern after 38 years, so we are always happy to see something about that...I also love Kentucky...beautiful state!

Fabulous hike -- I really enjoyed it (from the comfort of my computer chair) ... I had to stop to look up the word 'palisade' as I only knew it in the fence definition -- now I know it is a line of cliffs and I could have guessed that by your beautiful pictures. I particularly loved the flower growing out of the rock -- there is something so wonderful about these plucky flowers that just grow, no matter where they're "planted." Thanks BK -- I loved everything about this post!
