Which Snake Am I?

I saw this fella while on our visit in North Carolina. I've had some difficulty making a positive ID, but I think I've narrowed it down to either a Northern Water Snake or a Brown Water Snake. The Brown Water Snake supposedly doesn't inhabit the part of NC where we were, but I know better than to place barriers on Ma Nature. I'm leaning toward a Northern Water Snake and if anyone knows for sure, please confirm or correct me. Maybe it's not either one.

Great pictures ..... but then it also said. I am terrified of snakes. Helsigvis we have only A poisonous snake in Denmark: a hugorn (Vipera berus). Wishing you a good weekend. Hanne Bente / hbt.finus.dk

I think you are correct, Brian...it looks like the northern water snake, but then, I don't know for sure either. Whichever one it is, you got some incredible photos of it! I am not sure I would have been quite that close...any snake in the water for me is scary! My last one in the water was a 4' copperhead - and I was in a canoe! Yikes!

Beautiful snake -- not really sure of what kind -- but you've captured him/her very well. xoxo

Great shots. Non-poisonous snakes are all Ok with me as long as they are "over there".

Great shots! I'm not sure what type of snake that is either, but it does appear to be well fed:)

There is an environmental center close to us and I took a picture a few months ago with the kids next to a Northern Water Snake and the sign next to it describing the facts about it. I just looked at the picture and the picture with the description looks just like the snake you took a picture of, but the snake in the tank looked like it had spots instead of stripes. I tried, but not sure. Great pics though.

Oh, Brian, I hate snakes. Even looking at pictures of them. But I have to admit you got some great shots of him.
